The jury may still be out on cryptocurrencies but demand for blockchain is strong, with blockchain developers making more money than they did six months ago.

According to management consulting firm Janco Associates’ recent biannual report, blockchain developers are now receiving a median pay of US$132,000. Have experience in the field?  Then expect at least an additional US$40,000 on top of that.

Salaries for blockchain engineers are now on par with developers of artificial intelligence (AI).

The appetite for blockchain developers comes at no surprise considering LinkedIn recently ranked blockchain developer as the top emerging job, and that demand for these specialists increased by at least 700 per cent over the past two years.

The steep growth in demand has resulted in concerns of industry skills shortages, however Bez Tavassoli, who heads up the technology and sales division of recruitment agency Michael Page, said this would likely not be a long-term issue.

“Over the medium to long term, no, it (skills shortage) won’t be an issue,” Tavassoli said.

“In the short term, it just may be a challenge in identifying where the skill sets are going to come by.”
